One of Us is Lying/Author of the Month-May

One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus

Publisher: Delacorte Press

Published: May 30, 2017

Rating: 5/5

One of Us is Lying is a story with a breakfast club type setting: it has the jock, Cooper; the brain, Bronwyn; the beauty, Addy; the criminal, Nate; and the outcast Simon. Five of them wind up in detention, and four walk out alive after witnessing the death of one of their classmates. Simon ends up dying on the eve of his newest post on his gossip app, and the main suspects are the four left alive, because they have secrets that were about to be revealed to the entire world.

I honestly felt this was a great diverse group of people with very diverse pasts, and they have to deal with the consequences of their actions and how their actions affect their lives and their families. I love how it goes in depth about the pressure of family expectations, the issues with drug use, and such. I also like how while her characters had the labels of typical people like the brain or the beauty, they were so much more than that. The criminal was really well rounded and had a lot of heart and character. I think he honestly was one of my favorite characters in the story, mainly because you really got to see his barriers get broken down, and that there was so much more to him than his selling drugs. I just loved seeing him develop as the story went on.

Also the beauty, Addy, was actually really smart and wasn’t like a typical blonde girl sometimes portrayed in fiction. She made a mistake and learned from it and learned to fix herself and her character. She also wasn’t put there to ruin everything, she served a much bigger purpose than is typical seen, and I loved that about this book.

This book really kept me guessing with the mystery! I thought I had it figured out a few times during the story and I ended up being totally wrong! Any time I thought I knew who did it or that it was this way, I ended up having to back to the drawing board, because I never guessed it right! I just was hooked onto this book and the mystery and everything about it! One of my favorites this year!

And that romance man…let me tell you! I support it all the way and I love it and at first it crushed me and I was okay with it and I just…OTP FOREVER. I just really enjoyed that the romance wasn’t the main focus, and it was so cute, and not used as a device to drag the story on! Loved it so much!

Overall I just really enjoyed this book and this author’s writing! The plot was super fun and interesting, I loved the mystery of it, I love the Breakfast Club vibes since it’s one of my favorite movies ever!

And the writing and this book is why Karen M. McManus is the Author of the Month for May! I’ll leave a link to her goodreads page here:

I highly recommend picking this book up and reading it! You definitely won’t be disappointed!

I can’t wait to see what else Karen brings out into the world!

Arc Books for Trade Haul

Hey everyone! I’m just going to do a quick ARC haul for you guys! These I got in the mail recently through trades with some people on Books for Trade.

For those that don’t know Books for Trade is a hashtag on Twitter where people posts books and swag they don’t want anymore an try and Trade them for things they do want! I traded a few things over the months and I’m loving it!

So let’s get started!

First off I got Legacy of Kings and Empire of Dust by Eleanor Herman through a trade for my extra copy of Now I Rise by Kiersten White. She sent both in trade for it so I’m super thankful to Crystal for including Legacy when I only traded for Empire!

BTW these are about a young Alexander the Great!

The next two below are from Devyn on Twitter and I sent her two JLA ARCs and she sent me This Mortal Coil by Emily Subada which is like a hacker book I think. Then she also sent me Labyrinth Lost by Zoroada Cordova which is about Mexican witches.

And that’s my little ARC haul for right now so let me know your thoughts in the comments as I would love to know!

Have a good night!

Just What I Needed

Just What I Needed by Lorelei James

Publisher: Berkley

Published: August 2nd, 2016

Rating: 4/5

Just What I Needed is the companion sequel to What You Need. This is about the brother of Brady, Walker, who owns his own construction company and meets Trinity who is an artist. They meet when Trinity locks lips with him at a club, and accidentally gives him the wrong number. They meet again at a volunteer project and hit it off.

I rated this book and the previous one 4 stars mainly because while I really enjoy them they weren’t like mind-blowing and life changing! But I still really adore this book and the series so I still highly recommend it!

But as a fine arts major in college, I loved reading about Trinity and her love for her work and what she does. I like reading about her getting in the zone of her work! Artists so just super interesting for me to read and I can relate to them in a level! I think that’s why I enjoy Trinity as a character so much in this book because her love of art just showed through her very being.

I also liked the little snippets of Brady and Lennox that we got in this book because they were so cute in book one so I hoped we got more of them in this book and we did! Mainly I wanted more because out of the couples, they were my favorite…until Axl and Annika!

Trinity is a really interesting and funny character and I loved her randomness, also her random rambles that go on for a while! They’re funny to read about and so cute when it causes Walker to have to kiss her to stop her. She’s an artist who works in many different mediums and I like reading about her passion to work in art and stick to her guns! I enjoyed the glimpse into her mind in her POV chapters, and at times her filter from her head didn’t exist and she would say random things that sometimes got her in trouble! Like she didn’t know she would say something that she thought she kept in her mind.

Walker was so cute! I liked him a lot. And his storyline with his feelings being hurt because he feels his brothers and cousins are just off doing their own lives and just seemed to forgot about him. I thought it added so much depth to his character and I could really see that his relationship with Trinity really helped him and I felt it was great watching it develop!

But I felt it was so great that they opened their eyes up and handled it together as a family and really were honest with each other and did their best to let Walker know that he was loved and they were there for him. Again I love the strong family ties and mentions in this series!

Overall adore this series and highly recommend! It might not be the greatest thing in the world but it was super cute and fun to read and you’ll definitely love it like I do!

Let me know in the comments your thoughts on this book and the series as I would love to know!

What You Need

What You Need by Lorelei James

Publisher: Signet

Published: January 5, 2016

Rating: 4/5

So I never really post reviews about romance novels which I think is so weird of me to do since I read so many of them and I adore new adult and adult romances! I just love this series and I just finished the 3rd book today and it was fantastic! My review will be posted soon for that as well!

This story is about a girl named Lennox who has a dark past and Brady who is the CFO of his family’s company. He had his eye on her and she always thought he was very attractive so when Brady’s family tries to intervene and get him to let loose, he does with Lennox. And their relationship develops from there.

I adore Brady and Lennox! Lennox was such a breath of fresh air as a character and I thought her past was so interesting to read about! I also liked how Brady seemed to have his own dark parts of his past and how it really shaped who he was; but he was working hard to shed that from his character. Why Lennox’s past would seem kind of typical for romance novels, but Lorelei really makes it work and seem unique and different for this story.

I also really adored the friendship vibes with Lennox and her friends, and the family vibes from Brady and his family. His family was really present and they made an effort to hang out at times even though they work together. I think it’s always great that family is active in his life, and friends are active in her life. That is one of the things I enjoy about new adult and adult romances; because you don’t always see that in YA.

I highly recommend if you’re looking for a fun romance book that you pick this one up, because you really will enjoy it! I binge read all the current books in this series in a little over a week and I am obsessed! I need the next book like now!

Brady is a hottie but I love that he really was a bit nerdy at times and was awkward at other times as well. Those characteristics really made him endearing and made me adore him even more than I was before. I also enjoyed their relationship as a whole. There was no insta-love, they really got to know each other and develop their relationship like a normal couple would. I really commend James on writing a couple many others could relate to in many different aspects.

Again I highly recommend this series and I will definitely be checking out James’ other work in the future because I am just obsessed with her plots, her writing, and her characters!

Let me know in the comments your thoughts and if you’ve read this book or this author’s work because I would love to know!

Even The Darkest Stars

Even the Darkest Stars by Heather Fawcett

Publisher: Balzer + Bray

Published: September 5, 2017

Rating: 5/5

Even the Darkest Stars is about Kazmin who lives in a Himalayan village amidst a world full of magic! She has her heart set on being a Royal Explorer and when THE Royal Explorer comes to her village she thinks this is it. He is coming to recruit someone to help him get to the top of the deadliest mountain top on a mission for the Empire. When her sister joins another Explorer to try and get to the top of that peak she joins the famous explorer to help him and also save her sister.

I loved this book so much! It’s just packed full of secrets, adventure, and magic! It was just such a fun story and I loved the journey it took you on with Kazmin and Tem.

Kazmin I thought was an amazing character! She loved climbing mountains and throughout the story she showed such amazing courage. Mainly when she was climbing the peak of Raksha, she was just so brave and showed such amazing strength when she did her best to keep going even though it was really hard for her to. I really admired her and her ability to push past her pain and doubt and do her best to make it. She really is a fighter. She is honestly one of my favorite literary female characters!

That reveal though…wow!!! So many secrets were revealed and my jaw dropped when I read about a certain character and what that person really was…wow!! Again wow! I just could not even! I did not expect that and I was blown away by it!

When you read this book and get to that part, you’ll understand!

Jaw dropped during that whole final couple chapters!

Because not only is that secret revealed, it’s expanded on further on and the whole truth is out!

Again I was so into it and loved it and thought that Heather really did a great job adding drama and action into the story!

Tem was adorable though. I loved him so much! I thought he was such a good friend, and reading about Tem and Kazmin together was such fun. They were so protective of each other and she really encouraged him to pursue magic since it was what he was good at and what he loved. I also liked that he couldn’t let her go without him going along to watch over her and he went with her on this journey even though it could have affected his health.

Not only was Kazmin a strong main character, Tem was a strong supporting character. I hope we get more of him in the next book in the series! I really like his character so I want more!

River was funny, and tough, and I like his storyline and what he brought to the table!

Overall it was a really good start to a series and I cannot wait to read more from Heather and more from the series and characters! The writing was fun, the characters amazing, and the plot was super amazing and fun, and such a wild ride! I couldn’t put it down and I didn’t want to put it down because I wanted to finish it! Then I was sad that I finished it since the next book isn’t coming out until next year!

Let me know your thoughts down below in the comments as I would love to know!

Small Book Haul

Hi everyone! I wanted to post a quick haul from the past couple weeks! I got a few things in the mail and I just got some items today so that’ll be in another post later this week!

So I kind of made a small order of classics on the Book Depository because I’m obsessed with Vintage’s classic books!

The first book I got is Tess of the D’Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy and wow just look at that cover! It’s so beautiful! Along with that book I got The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood which has recently been made into a TV show on Hulu. Lastly in that order I got The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux. I got this because I read Roseblood earlier this year and loved it and I got curious about what it was based on! I really hope I like this book like I know lots of people do!

Next I got a couple of books by Patricia Bossano for review from the publisher! They’re supposed to be fun fantasy reads so I can’t wait to dive into these! I’ll be posting reviews on each of these in the near future once I’m finished with them!

I also went to Target recently to get some things and ended up getting The One Memory of Flora Banks by Emily Barr. I also really want to read this and it seems short so I hope to knock this out in a day or two!

Lastly are the last three Caraval UK hardcovers with the different designs on them that I needed! A really cool person in the UK got them and sent them to me for my collection since we can’t get these in the US unless we trade! I was so excited that I got them in my mail box and she was so nice enough to send some goodies along with them! I appreciate it!

Keep a look out for my next haul and reviews that I’ll posting this week and next! Let me know what books you got recently in the comments below as I would love to know!
